On July 1, 2025, PAABA volunteer Kei Chin and PAABA member Soyeun D Choi scouted the pathway from Pets in Need in Palo Alto to the Adobe Creek Loop Trail, as part of PAABA’s efforts to establish a regular walk event, to be held with rescue dogs and puppies when available.
Through this event, PAABA hopes to encourage regular exercise habits, with the hope that the addition of fellow walkers and occasional furry friends will sweeten the activity! To this end, PAABA is in the planning stages of creating local walks around Pets in Needs’ “Doggy Day Out” – which is currently administered on an appointment basis. Pets in Need has been a vigilant neighbor and benefactor of dogs and puppies since at least 1965 when Mrs. Alice Hodges and Mrs. Jean Miller Mahoney, founded “Lost Animal Registry” (renamed in 1967, when Pets in Need was registered as a 501 (c)(3)). More recently, Pets in Need has expanded into the Palo Alto Animal Shelter offices located at 3281 East Bayshore Road1.
On days when no Pets in Need dogs are available, PAABA members are welcome to bring their own pets (cats and other animals are also welcome!) to walk. Of course, participation will be contingent on some basic housekeeping rules: (1) All pets must be maintained under their owners’ control; i.e. on leash, in strollers or carrying cases; (2) Aggressive or anti-social pets must be disclosed and kept away from other pets and walkers; (3) Humans must respect pets and abide by pet parents’ instructions.
For the July 1, 2025 outing, Ms. Choi brought her uncle’s new puppy, a 3 month
old Malti-poo who will be carried on public walks until she finishes receiving her puppy
vaccinations.
During this excursion, the trio made some important discoveries: (1) The path from Pets in Need to the Adobe Creek Loop Trail runs parallel to the 101 and its traffic noises, and (2) parts of the Adobe Creek Loop Trail prohibits dogs! The one-hour outing was never too noisy to hold conversation and the day, thanks to generous Bay Area weather patterns, was beautiful.
Stay tuned for more information!
